Mera kya chahta hai is a bollywood movie directed by gaurav ventura and produced by shashikant pandey. it features a story of a man finding his identity and going through the struggle of quality life. the film stars anupam kher, sonam kapoor, suresh shrivastava and others in pivotal roles. a shy government worker vijay basu (anupam kher) has been married for 15 years to his wife sunita (sonal pradhan), but doesn't have any children from her because they cannot have one due to some reasons. once vijay meets an old man named mr. shekar (gope) who tells him that until he does not experience divorce, he will never understand the meaning of life. the next day vijay finds his wife sleeping with another man, who turns out to be his best friend, shrikant (suresh shrivastava). he is shocked and wants to kill his wife but doesn't do so for their children's sake. instead, he divorces her and moves on with his life which is now full of surprises. he goes to a bank to open an account where he sees a girl who looks like an angel (sonam kapoor) and falls in love with her on first sight. he later comes to know that she is his daughter, whose mother died when she was just 6 years old. vijay also falls in love with her and he too is in love with her in return. the girl's mother (naomi shah) comes to know that her daughter is in love with her father and doesn't like the idea of vijay having a live in lover because it will hurt her childhood relationship. hence, she plans to get her married to someone else, but the young couple find out this plan and go behind their mother's back and marry instead. the girl's mother is heartbroken and leaves her daughter and vijay as well as shrikant behind. then vijay begins to work in a jewellery shop, which he feels is the reason for his financial downfall and seeks help from shrikant. shrikant blackmails vijay for their old friendship and also kidnaps the shop owner's son to take control of the shop. but his plan doesn't succeed and he is thrown out from his job, after which he goes back to his wife sunita to live with her family. however, things don't go well with them as they both have different ideas about life after divorce. he realises that he has to take the big step and meet his daughter and go through the pain of divorce, but she keeps on telling him that there is no need for it as she is happy with him and that their kids will be okay with vijay even after divorce. vijay goes to shrikant's house where he finds out his wife (suresh shrivastava) lives alone and tells him that she didn't want any child from her husband because they were too much of a burden for her.
